Which Web Browser?
A web browser is one of those things we take for
granted and often accept the one that resides in our
computer, usually internet explorer is the default
browser and we simply use that one, blissfully unaware
that we have a choice.
There are six major components included in all web
browsers.
Status bar: At the bottom of your browser window
you will see the status bar which displays a variety
of information but mainly the load speed and the URL
of the address when you move your mouse over.
Address bar: Look at the long box at the top
of your browser window, it displays the full URL,
(Website address) generally starting with http://www.
Title bar: Up at the very top of your browser
window; you will see bar, probably blue. This is where
you can see the title of the page with the website.
This particular one should say; "What Is A Web
Browser?".
Toolbar and Icons: The toolbar is a section
that displays icons usually, at the top of your browser
just underneath the Title Bar. The icons are small
graphics; arrows for instance to illustrate the Back
button, a house for the Home button, the probably
a recycle type icon for the Refresh button, etc.
Display Window: This is your work space; the
big white area where the website you are reading resides.
Scroll Bars: The sliders on a website that
you enable us to scroll down, up, left or right.
At one stage our choice was limited to Internet Explorer;
a few years ago I adopted Firefox and never looked
back. I'm still using it and believe it is a superior
browser, but what choices do you have?
Microsoft's Internet Explorer: Used by most
Internet users because it is pre-installed on most
computers.
Opera: I tend to think of this as a quirky
browser used by techies ...don't know why and might
be wrong!.
Mozilla's Firefox: Firefox is my personal favourite
but I won't try to convince you as to why.
Mac Safari: Specifically for Mac users, Safari
is possibly the designers' and developers choice for
a Web browser.
Google Chrome. New(ish) to the arena and geared
as a lightweight, fast loading browser, great for
'netbooks'.
