Website
Marketing
Website Marketing Gurus come and go; Can you imagine
or indeed remember the worldwide web without Google?
It wasn't too long ago and now Google experts are
all over the net!
Do you remember a time when there was no broadband?,
we were blessed with just dial-up telephone connections
and we couldn't be on the phone as well as on the
internet, the source of many a family battle, unless
you had another dedicated telephone line.
Images were so slow to load that people were reluctant
to include pictures.
Tony Blair the then British Prime Minister told us
all that if businesses don't get a website, they will
fail...and many got websites but couldn't see the
benefit or increase in sales.
The fundamental issue was that Cyber Space was beginning
to fill with websites but there was no order in many
senses of the word and no popular way of finding a
website.
When the problem was identified and 'The Search
Engine' was born. Google was still to be created
and 'navigators' were the new kids on the block being
given names of ancient explorers and acronyms of geek
speak. In short, we had a navigator (Now Internet
Explorer or Mozilla Firefox) to which we typed the
URL (website address) and a search engine to crawl
around Cyber Space to find whatever you were looking
for. That was the theory anyway!
The biggest problem was getting found ....it was
much easier in the 90's! So-called search engine experts
popped up all over the place and then Google experts
began to emerge but instead of gaining an understanding
of how Google works; many practiced ways to manipulate
Google and developed extremely unethical website marketing
methods.
Search Engineers became part of a whole new industry
relating to website marketing and the term 'Search
Engine Optimisation' was formed. SEO consultants,
Website Marketing Experts, Internet Gurus, Google
Experts, Search Engine Optimisation Professionals,
the list goes on.
Then to add to all these titles someone coined the
terms 'black hat' and 'white hat' as descriptions
for the goodies and baddies. White Hat website marketing
experts tend to practice ethical internet marketing
whilst Black Hat website marketing experts lean towards
unethical website marketing.
The common goal is to achieve a top ranking in Google,
Yahoo and Bing etc. The methods used are debatable
- unethical maverick type marketing looks good on
the face of it but success is short term and damage
is very expensive.
You might like the bad guys on the frontier, believe
me, they won't help to promote and market your website
with long term goals. Instant website marketing magic
is a myth, with billions of websites in a line waiting
to be added to search engines before yours, it cannot
be quick. Choose ethical internet marketing strategies
for longer lasting results that will help you achieve
high search engine rankings and quality website traffic.
