What's
New With Google

The search engine wars were certainly very active
between Google during 2009, Bing and Yahoo, but what
can we expect to see in 2010?
NewsGroup and Google:
It will be interesting to see how Google's relationship
with online newspapers develops in 2010 - NewsGroup
is certainly a little miffed (to say the least) with
Google and will do battle for some sort payment system
if Google is going to continue providing links to
news stories for non subscribers. Google on the other
hand may choose to write its own content instead of
using NewsGroup's.
I dare say this situation will be closely
monitored by other online newspaper publishers to
see what action they may, or may not take.
Location based search results:
Smart-phones with GPS and location aware browsers
allow locality information to be used to help local
functionality of web applications with local search
results. I feel we'll soon be able to type in "taxi"
or "pizza" and be presented with the closest
taxi firm or pizza shop to your location.
Social Searching:
Bing and Yahoo are to integrate Twitter into their
search results. What does that mean for us? Initially
it will allow relevant tweets in your network be displayed
in your keyword searches, but in the future moving
we could easily see more personalised searches based
on our activity within social media sites.
Faster Loading Sites:
Google announced that page load times will become
a ranking signal in search results, with to encourage
improvement of the WWW experience. Many webmasters
are already optimising their websites to suit.
HTML 5:
HTML 5 will have features such as semantic tagging
implemented. In SEO terms it might not be noticed
for sometime, at least until the majority of websites
adopt it as standard design format.
